Itching for a Fight

I can’t see any reason that NATO would need to add new members. NATO is a military alliance and was created as a deterrent to the Soviet Union. Since there is no Soviet Union any more why do we still need NATO? Maybe there is a reason other than amassing extra troops for US aggression campaigns or pissing off Russia, but I don’t know.

. . . Can anyone help me out here?

It has to do with the "all for one idea." If everyone is on our side then no-one is on their side.

Dear Anon:
I get the "all for one concept" but why not invite Russia? Wouldn't it be good to have them on our side too: Why do we keep asking Russia's neighbors?

It still seems like it is a hegemony thing. We are OK having people help do our dirty work but not at the expense of them questioning our motives.

Anyone else care to weigh in on this?

If i was cynical I would say it has to do with the military hardware that is required by Nato. All of which is made in the US and EU, mostly US.

But its cheaper now with the dollar sinking.

enjoy.

Dear Jay,

Maybe those nuclear warhead detonators we "accidentally" shipped to Taiwan were part of a larger scheme?. . . hmmm interesting!

Do you know if NATO forces are required to purchase coordinated military hardware to be a member? It seems like it might be a get rich quick plan for the existing members but what incentive would a country like Macedonia or the Ukraine have for joining? Seems like a costly venture to be perceived as a "Western" country when they could just import a super walmart or KFC.
